A remote farmhouse with a weak copper line, a workshop beyond the reach of fibre, or a construction compound that needs to be live next week all face the same question: 4G versus satellite. Both can provide fast internet where conventional broadband has failed, but they work in very different ways. The right answer depends less on postcode alone and more on mast signal, line of sight, how the connection will be used and how much downtime your site can tolerate.
For many rural properties, the best result comes from treating connectivity as an engineered installation rather than a box delivered through the post. For a farm or business, the decision should include more than download speed. Consider payment terminals, cloud backups, CCTV, alarm systems, remote machinery monitoring, staff devices and guest Wi-Fi. A connection that works for email may not be suitable for several HD cameras uploading footage or a busy office using cloud-based phone systems.
Ask whether you need a public or static IP address, especially if you operate remote access, specialist monitoring equipment or certain security systems. Some mobile and satellite services use shared addressing arrangements that can limit inbound connections. This does not make them unsuitable, but it should be designed around before installation rather than discovered when a critical system will not connect.
Data requirements also deserve an honest look. A household that streams television and uses video calls has very different needs from a construction office transferring drawings and running multiple VOIP handsets. Check allowances, traffic management and business support options, not just the advertised maximum speed.
