FTTP stands for Fibre to the Premises. A full-fibre cable runs all the way to your home, business or site, rather than stopping at a cabinet and relying on ageing copper for the final stretch. In rural areas, however, availability is rarely as simple as a green tick against a postcode. One cottage may be serviceable while the next property, a few hundred metres further along the road, is not. A village may have fibre in the centre but not on outlying lanes, farms or scattered hamlets. New-build homes can also be missed if the network design, permissions or ducting arrangements do not line up.

Do not assess the service only from the main office desk. Map the places that need a connection: gates, yards, barns, staff accommodation, meeting rooms, holiday lets and remote cameras. Then consider whether each location needs Wi-Fi, a wired connection or a dedicated outdoor link. This avoids paying for a fast primary connection that never reaches the points where work is actually done.
