What remote cameras need from broadband
Security cameras use broadband in two different ways. They upload footage from your property to an app, recorder or cloud service, and they send a live video stream when you open the app remotely. Upload speed is therefore usually more important than download speed.
A single camera set to high-definition video may use anything from 1 Mbps to 4 Mbps while it is streaming or uploading continuously. Higher-resolution models, colour night vision and multiple cameras can require significantly more. Fibre broadband if it is genuinely available
Full-fibre broadband is an excellent option when it is available at the property and can be installed within a sensible timeframe. Its high upload speeds suit cloud-recording cameras, multiple users and high-bandwidth applications such as video calls and backups.
However, many rural properties are shown as having planned fibre rather than live, orderable fibre. Others are connected by old copper lines that struggle with even one live camera feed. Satellite and hybrid broadband for the hardest locations
Some sites sit beyond useful mobile coverage: valleys, woodland locations, remote estates and temporary compounds are common examples. Satellite broadband can provide internet access almost anywhere with a suitable view of the sky.

For higher-risk premises, consider whether your system needs local recording, a battery-backed camera, a second broadband route or mobile failover. No connection can promise that every external event will be avoided, but sensible design prevents one simple fault from taking the whole system offline.
Business sites should also check whether remote access needs a static IP address, secure VPN access or a managed router. These are not essential for every domestic camera setup, but they can make management safer and simpler for larger networks, multiple users and professional monitoring arrangements.
