Why house Wi-Fi rarely reaches a detached garage
Most home routers are designed to cover rooms, not separate buildings. Brick walls, foil-backed insulation, metal cladding, machinery, trees and parked vehicles all reduce Wi-Fi signal. Even where a phone shows one or two bars, the connection may be too unstable for video calls, cloud software, smart cameras or card payments.
Distance is only part of the problem. A garage 15 metres from the house with a clear line of sight may be easier to connect than one 5 metres away behind thick stone walls and a steel roller shutter. Rural homes often add further challenges: large gardens, outbuildings, uneven ground and older construction materials that stop radio signals quickly.

Start with the connection, not the Wi-Fi kit
Adding excellent Wi-Fi equipment will not fix slow incoming broadband. If your house connection struggles with a single video call, sharing it with a workshop full of devices will expose the problem quickly.

It is also easy to overlook network capacity. A garage CCTV system can use significant upload bandwidth, especially when multiple cameras record to the cloud. If the property relies on 4G, 5G or satellite, the package and network design should reflect that demand.
Finally, avoid treating outdoor equipment as fit-and-forget. Weatherproof hardware is designed for external use, but brackets, cable entries and mounts still need to be installed correctly.
